prynce kynge Henry the vii. father vnto our most drad souerayne
lord Kynge Henry the viii. To whom be all honour, reue[n]ce, and
ioyfull contynaunce of his prosperous reygne, to the pleasure of
god and weale of this his realme amen. 1533 In his biography of Chaucer, WG refers to Fabian in a note
concerning the death of Richard II: ‘The first author, who mentions
the tale of his [Richard's] being murdered by eight assassins, is
Fabian. He however coolly affirms of this story, that it is what “of
moste wryters is testyfied and alleged”' (Godwin's
Life of
Chaucer 2:552).
