Alexander Wedderburn (1733–1805) was appointed lord chancellor. Wedderburn had been associated with the opposition Whigs during the 1780s and his appointment to lord chancellor contributed to other moderate Whigs, including the third duke of Portland, to join Pitt's cabinet.
