James Abercromby was the first Scot to be elected speaker. On the 19th February 1835 Godwin recorded ‘Parliament meets: Abercromby, Speaker, 316 to 306’. The choice of James Abercromby, First Baron Dumfernline as speaker for the opening of Parliament was an important one in terms of being a benchmark of party strength, and generated considerable interest. On the insistence of Melbourne, Abercromby stood and was chosen over Manners Sutton 316 votes to 306. He was made Baron of Dunfermline on his retirement in 1839.
