  • Name: Adair, Robert
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 24  May  1763
  • Death Date: 3  October  1855
  • Occupation: politician
  • Occupation: diplomatist

Adair was a close friend of Charles James Fox. He sat in parliament 1799-1812 but was primarily known for his extensive travel and diplomatic activity for which he was awarded GCB in 1831.

Godwin notes meeting a W J Adair in 1789, and the early Adairs in the diary are linked to circles around Brand Hollis, although there is no Adair between May 1790 and the appearance of R Adair in 1796. After the first R Adair mention in 1796 the use of the name with the initial is frequent, but there are also entries where there is no initial and where the circles (especially Debrett's) are indistinguishable from those within which he meets R Adair. It is possible that Godwin had consistently distinguished R Adair from another Adair, whom we are unable to identify, but it is also possible, and the context of the meetings in the diary make it likely, that Adair and R Adair are used interchangeably from 1796. The entries have been coded accordingly. This is bolstered by the fact that Henry Crabb Robinson notes the presence of 'Adair the diplomatist' at a dinner on 18 Oct 1813.

In addition, R Adair appears in the 1796 lists, under 1796.
