A possible candidate is Robert Batty who gave lectures on midwifery at Great Marlborough St and was a keen enough amateur aritist to exhibit at the Royal Academy 1788-1897. The DNB claims that he did not settle in London until after August 1797 and about half of the hundred appearances are before this point. Amelia Opie's memoirs mentions a Batty in the context of her social circle, once as 'Dr Batty', which perhaps makes this identification more likely.
Batty appears first in 1795, quickly peaks and then falls off, though he re-appears occasionally right up to the end of the diary. All but half a dozen appearances are before 1810. He appears frequently with Holcroft and Amelia Opie, also with John Thelwall, John Horne Tooke, Phillips, and in later years mainly at plays and exhibitions.
Overall, this identification seems fairly probable: Batty is often seen at exhibitions and in conjunction with other artists. The only discrepancy is the date that the DNB gives for his move to London after taking a degree at St Andrew's. However, the DNB also says that part of his medical education was in London and he is even more likely to have been in London at least part of the previous decade given he was exhibiting at the Royal Aacademy.
