The Baxters were friends of Godwin's from Dundee. Godwin's main acquaintance was William Thomas Baxter. His son Robert became a friend of Charles Clairmont while Charles was in Edinburgh. Later, Mary Shelley was sent there for health reasons in 1812 and became friendly with two of his five daughters, Isabel and Christina. Christina (Christy) returned to London with Mary and they became close. Isabel married David Booth. After Mary and Shelley returned to England, Booth refused to allow his wife to communicate with her friend. However, Baxter visited the couple and introduced some thawing in the relationships - see Mary Shelley's jounral, p. 179.
Baxter appears with the following inititials: 'W T', 'C', 'R', 'Mr & 'Tho.'. The Baxter family includes William Thomas, Cowley, Robert, Charles, and Christy . Although it is possible to identify many of these entries, it is difficult to unpick Charles, Cowley, and Christy. Plain 'Baxter' is more likely to refer to William Thomas although this cannot be definitive. Isabel Booth née Baxter is excluded from this communal identification.

Isabel Booth was the wife of writer David Booth and the daughter of William Baxter. Mary Shelley went to live with Baxter's family and became good friends with Isabel.
Booth had been married to Isabel's sister and had married Isabel after her death. Locke (291) points to this being 'in defiance of both his church and the law.' Booth prevented any contact betwen Isabel and Mary and Shelley, even after the Shelley's marriage. Locke describes him as 'by all accounts a husband bad-tempered to the point of cruelty.'
