Bedford was a radical Foxite Whig like his brother Francis whose estate he inherited in 1802. He was a member of the Society of the Friends of the People. Godwin first heard from Lord Lauderdale and Bedford in 1808, there is then a period of silence until 1833 when he sees Bedford with Lord Grey, or in relation to Grey, between 1830 and 1833, when he is negotiating a pension.
