Belsham began his literary career with Essays, Philosophical, Historical and Literary (1789) which were well recieved. He followed this with a second collection of essays which again demonstrated his dissenting and reforming principles, including an attack on Edmund Burke. These views were shared with his brother Thomas who was a significant Unitarian preacher. Much of his later life was dedicated to history writing.
