Bentley opened a printing business with his brother Samuel in 1819 which became well known for the quality of its work. Bentley is best known for the cheap reprints of novels he produced with his partner Henry Colburn 1831-56. The Standard Novels series had 126 volumes in total (monthly one-volume reprints at 6s.) which included the first cheap reprints of Jane Austen and Godwin's Caleb Williams, St Leon, and Fleetwood.
It is not absolutely certain that this is Richard Bentley rather his brother Samuel, but Godwin's novels were published by Richard, as were some of Mary Shelley's and this seems the most probable identification. The 1809 and 1817 Bentley entries are not coded for Richard.
