Betty was a child prodigy actor who played many significant roles on the London stage when he was a teenager. He was immensely popular for a number of years before the novelty wore off. Godwin spent some time trying to get him to play the main role in his 1807 tragedy Faulkener, both by calling on Betty and by talking to Richard Wroughton.
