Probably a tenant of Sir Thomas Shelley who was seeking to extend his lease on the estate. Shelley had agreed Godwin could negotiate with Dr Bethune's agent, Mr William Bryant in March 1816. The entry to Bethume in August 1816 is 'Seek Bethune with MJ'. In September Bethune writes to Godwin. It is unclear why communication should have continued into August and September, but seems probably that Bethune wrote directly to Godwin because of his earlier attemot to contact him. See The Journals of Mary Shelley, p. 105.
