  • Name: Blackwood, William
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 20  November  1776
  • Death Date: 16  September  1834
  • Occupation: publisher

Blackwood was the publisher and founder of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked for some time in London before returning to Edinburgh to start his own business in 1804. He began publishing Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in 1817 and it proved highly successful as well as controversial.

Identification is confirmed through a letter from William Blackwood to Mary Shelley dated 24 April 1830, sending her a copy of the magazine with a notice for Cloudesley in it and saying that he had a great respect for Mr Godwin and had come to know him personally at the dinner parties given by Mr Johnson. Blackwood's association with Johnson corresponds with one of the diary references.
