Blatspeil is called on several times by Godwin between 1822 and 1831. His occupation and nationality are unclear. He is referred to by Claire Clairmont in a letter from Dresden to Jane Williams Hogg, who says that any books that Jane buys for her can be sent to her mother, Mary Jane Godwin, who will arrange for their dispatch through Mr Blatspeil and his friends at Hambro' safe to Leipsic, suggesting that he has German connections and possibly some consular connections with Hamburg.
