John Bonney was a lawyer and a member of the Society for Constitutional Information. He was a longtime friend and supporter of John Horne Tooke and was arrested with him on a charge of high treason on 16 May 1794. He was later discharged after the acquittal of Tooke, Hardy and Thelwall. In 1796 he supported Tooke in his bid for the Westminster seat in parliament. He also supported Francis Burdett in the Middlesex elections of 1802 and 1804.
