Booth was an actor of some renown who first gained public notice in supporting roles to Edmund Kean before appearing in competition with Kean. He emigrated to America in 1812 where he lived for the rest of his life. He returned to England in 1825 and 1836 for brief visits. He was the father of Edwin Thomas Booth, renowned American tragedian, and John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln's assassin.
