Cadell became a clerk and eventually, in 1811, a partner in Archibald Constable's publishing house. He was a personal professional friend of Sir Walter Scott and was closely involved in many of his publications, notably the author's edition of Waverley in 1827.
Godwin met Cadell in 1816 on his trip to Scotland and subsequently wrote to him in 1830 with a view to selling him the copyright to a new work, probably Thoughts on Man.
