Cartwright was one of the founding members of the Free Society of Artists in 1763. He moved to Rome in 1770 where he met Henry Fuseli who took an interest in him. They both returned to England in 1779 and shared rooms for almost a decade. He exhibited at the Royal Academy.
One feature about the references to 'Cartwright' is that there is a consistent link prior to 1811, with artists, notably Fuseli: The first call is with Barry; the second is at Johnson's with Fuseli; the third is at the Milton Gallery with Opie, Lawrence, Barry and others; and the fourth and fifth also at Johnson's with Fuesli.
However, users should note the presence in the diary of Major John Cartwright the political reformer. It is possible, however unlikely given the social contexts, that some references to Cartwright may refer to him and that Godwin only intermittently uses the prefix 'Major'.
There is a further unidentified final entry under Cartwright, after both the painter and reformer are dead. But that Cartwright seems to be someone with whom Mary Shelly is acting as an intermediary in 1826 - possibly someone in the book trade. This Cartright has been left uncoded, along with rev.Cartwright, whom he meets once at Horne Tooke's, and Miss Cartwright, whom he also meets just once.
