Caroline married the Prince of Wales in 1795. The fact that the groom was the worst for wear due to alcohol during the ceremony was an inauspicious start to a disastrous marriage. When George became king in 1820 he attempted to end the marriage by act of parliament in one of the most sensational and fraught public scandals of the early nineteenth century. He failed but Caroline was refused entry to his coronation and public opinion, once strongly behind her, began to find against her. She died shortly afterwards.
Godwin recorded her death.
