Chandler exhibited at the Royal Academy in the late 1780s and early 1790s. The DNB suggests that he subsequently moved to Scotland in 1800 where he remained. This suggestion is complicated by the letter to Godwin from John Phillips dated 24 January 1801, from Carnaby Market, London, which seems to imply that Chandler has not entirely quitted London. Although there is dispute over his date of death it seems clear that he is dead by 1810 and the 'Chandler' entry for 1813 has not been coded.
Chandler painted a portrait of Godwin in 1798 which is now held at the Tate Britain.
