William Godwin's Diary

Clennel,

  • Name: Clennel,
  • Gender: Unknown
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

Godwin's use of the plural indicates a couple or family.

First contact recorded in the diary is Godwin writing to him in 1799, and then no further contact until 1806 when Godwin meets him dining at Nicholson's. He often appears in conjunction with Booth, Nicholson or Thomas Turner, and often dines/sups at Godwin's. Clennels (plural) is used four times, 'Clennel engraver' is specified once in 1811.

Although this is only specified once, it is possible that all the references are to Luke Clennell (note different spelling), 1781-1840, artist and wood-engraver. The name is fairly rare and the dates fit: when Godwin writes to him in 1799 he would still have been in Newcastle, hence the lack of direct contact, but the DNB implies he moved to London soon after 1804, and Godwin sees him from 1806. Two problems with the identification are: that the entry to 'Clennel, engraver', in 1811 may be dijuntive, meaning that the rest are another Clennel; that all the plural references to Clennels are 1807-8 and the DNB gives the date of his marriage as August 1809. Godwin doesn't see him after 1811 and in 1817 Clennell was committed to a lunatic asylum. However, the date of marriage in DNB is very specific which casts doubt over this identification. 'Clennells' could refer to him and a brother although the DNB makes no reference to there being one who lived in London with him.

  • DNB, 'Thomas Bewick'.
  • Austin Dobson, Thomas Bewick and his Pupils (1899)
