Husband of Thomas Holcroft's daughter Sophie (marr. c. 1794). Cole was a merchant in Exeter, but seems to have transferred his business to Hamburg by 1799 so that Holcroft and his family stay with them briefly when they first arrive in Hamburg.
Godwin's contacts with Cole are entirely at Holcrofts, save for a few entries in 1802 and 1814; but the 1830 entry is linked to the Kenneys.

Holcroft's daughter by his second marriage. Coded as part of the plural Miss Holcroft's Godwin records in the 1790s. She marries William Cole in 1794 and is entered as S Cole or Mrs Cole, or as part of Coles. After Cole's death she maries Georges Nicholas Mergez, a Napoleonic General, and appears in the diary as Mme Mergez. Mergez (as Merget) appears in the diary in 1792-3, in association with Holcroft on several occasions.
