Constable set up his own bookselling business in 1795 in Edinburgh. This business concentrated on Scottish literature and history as did his fledgling publishing business begun in the same year. Constable also set up the Edinburgh Review in 1802 which was edited by Francis Jeffrey and was closely involved with the publication of many works by Sir Walter Scott.
Godwin met him first through Richard Phillips in 1807 and subsequently had considerable contact with him. Constable was the Scottish distributor for the M.J. Godwin and Co. publishing house and Godwin's stepson, Charles Clairmont, did an apprenticeship with him in 1811. The relationship later soured when Constable threatened Godwin with arrest in May 1819 for failing to redeem two promissory notes.
Godwin recorded his death.

David was the son of Archibald Constable, a Scottish published with close connections to Godwin for a period. He became a book collector himself, travelling the Continent in search of antiquarian volumes. He became a lawyer in 1819 and later moved to Brussels for a time after the failure of his business.
On 2 February 1822 Godwin wrote to William Henry Curran, who was making a trip to Edinburgh, to recommend various people to him. The first mentioned is David Constable, who 'is a much worthier man than his father. He is decisively learned and ingenious.'
