David was the son of Archibald Constable, a Scottish published with close connections to Godwin for a period. He became a book collector himself, travelling the Continent in search of antiquarian volumes. He became a lawyer in 1819 and later moved to Brussels for a time after the failure of his business.
On 2 February 1822 Godwin wrote to William Henry Curran, who was making a trip to Edinburgh, to recommend various people to him. The first mentioned is David Constable, who 'is a much worthier man than his father. He is decisively learned and ingenious.'
