Mrs Cotton was a friend of Mary Wollstonecraft's . Wollstonecraft stayed with her in Berkshire when she was recovering from her break-up with Imlay. Mrs Cotton visited Wollstonecraft in London when she and Godwin first became intimate. It is unclear whether there was a Mr Cotton, and we cannot be certain that Godwin's entries for 'M Cotton' relate to Mrs Cotton. As a result they have not been coded. Plain 'Cotton' entries after 1797 have not been coded.
