There are several members of the Curran family who appear in Godwin’s diary, and we have chosen to isolate John Philpot, the Irish barrister (483 mentions), his daughter Amelia, the painter (156 mentions) and W Curran, probably Curran's eldest son (153 mentions). Other siblings and children (R, S, J B, and so on) can be found by searching for ‘Curran’, although they have not been assigned tags. We have also included Miss Curran, and 'Amelia' in 1830 as entries for Amelia Curran.
In 1800 Godwin visited Dublin upon invitation from John Philpot. Curran appears first in 1799, and is referred to as C, his first initials J P, Phil., and also Rathfarnham, his place of habitation in Dublin, also known as the Priory (the main abbreviations - especially the use of C and C's come during Godwin's visit to Ireland, when there is no possibility of confusion between Curran and Cooper for whom he also uses C). Godwin occasionally abbreviates this as ‘Rm’. In 1817, after traveling, John Philpot returned to his London residence in Brompton in a state of declining health, and when Godwin visited him there we’ve coded the placename as Curran to indicate his presence there.
Curran’s daughter, Amelia, was also a frequent visitor the Godwin household and became firmly ensconced in the family’s extensive circle which, at that point, included Percy Bysshe Shelley, whose portrait she eventually painted. Any references to A Curran have been understood to be Amelia, and when in the appropriate context, the variations A C, Miss Curran, and the one reference to her by first name alone have been included.
