  • Name: Curtis,
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

Probably Godwin's stationer. Have included 'Gale and Curtis' in 1809, which is perhaps a company of stationers, and in 1810 Curtis (Bookseller) incl. Curtis Jr and H Curtis

Locke and Marshall both refer to Curtis as Godwin's stationer and describes how he helped the family after the 1822 eviction. the name is first mentioned in 1796 at a J Johnson dinner, but this is possibly someone different, as he doesn't re-appear until 1809.

From 1809 Godwin frequently calls on and also meets Curtis at St Bride's, occasionally specified as a bookseller/ stationer (eg. the first time Curtis calls on him). Curtis is also sought by Godwin, often in conjunction with Longdil. 'Curtis, Gale and C.' appears alongside Rodd and Macmillan, and Godwin sends CC to Curtis to run errands. This is all strongly indicative of a book trade context.

The BBTI has a few stationers called Curtis in London at this time. It is perhaps most likely this person can be identified as John Curtis, active from 1772-1823, and a successor to his father Thomas Curtis, active 1751-1813. The addresses they traded from, prob at different stages in their careers, are 47 Fleet Street, 10 Newgate St and 8 Ludgate Hill (so v close to Skinner Street, though in fairness most stationers would have been close by).

H. Curtis remains untagged but all instances of Curtis and Curtis Jnr have been included as it is likely to refer to a commerical relationship. Curtis in 1796 has also been untagged as it is likely to refer to someone else (perhaps the painter John Curtis, DNB?)
