One of Godwin's more elusive friends. There are two letters from Cuxson in which Cuxson asks Godwin to keep his secret; and another in which s/he asks Godwin if he can spare an hour or two of his time to see 'an afflicted being' (i.e., Cuxson). The first letter is dated in Godwin's hand, 'Nov 15', but there is no record of a call on Godwin by Cuxson on any November 15. The second note is dated 'Friday evening.' But there is no obvious candidate in Godwin's diary for an occasion on which he calls on Cuxson on a Saturday in response to a note or after an absence (if the affliction was an illness).
There is no record of an S. Cuxson in The Times or other papers available and searchable online, although there is a Mr Cuxson, a solicitor in Siffnal, Staffs - but there is no evidence connecting this person to Godwin. J Cuxson's and Mrs Cuxson have not been coded, but 'Cuxson' and 'Cuxsons' entries have been coded as S Cuxson since there seems to be nothing distinguishing the entries and the pattern suggests that Godwin's use of the initial is, in this case, random.
Godwin first meets Cuxson when he comes to tea with Fell in May 1799. Cuxson also seems to call with Tobin on two occasions. There are one or two other visits with Fell but the very great majority of calls or call on entries do not involve others. This suggests that Cuxson is more likely to be male - there are few women who call regularly on their own at Godwin's or dine or entertain him alone. And the occasional use of 'Cuxsons' suggest that there may be a couple and that S Cuxson is married to Mrs Cuxson, who also occasionally appears independently. The intensity of contact stops in November 1800. There are a few 'Cuxson' entries in 1801 and then nothing further.
