James Dallaway was an antiquarian and a priest. He was elected to the Society of Antiquaries in 1789 and toured the Balkans in the 1790s with his patron Robert Liston, earl of Bute. He became secretary to the earl marshal in 1797 and served in this position for the rest of his life, working in the College of Arms. He published extensively on antiquarian studies and art history.

Godwin met and corresponded with Dallaway in 1803 when he was researching his Life of Chaucer.
