Edward Smith Stanley, twelfth earl of Derby (1752–1834) was a sportsman, patron of horse-racing, and an occasional politician and supporter of Charles James Fox. Godwin met with him on several occasions, first at Lauderdale's and subsequently at Debrett's. Godwin noted the death of the second countess of Derby on 23 April 1829 and the death of the Earl on 21 October 1834.
Godwin entered his name correctly under 1796 in the 1796 lists.
