Daniel Isaac Eaton published Godwin's Cursory Strictures. The DNB suggests that he was imprisoned in solitary confinement at the end of 1803 for fifteen months, and it is unlikely that Eaton would have left prison before 4 February 1805, when he received a royal pardon. However, Godwin's diary suggests that he sees Eaton on three occasions in 1804 (2 'call on' entries in Oct 1804, and then an 'adv' at the theatre in November 1804).

The later 1805 contact is through Joseph Johnson, which is highly plausible, as is the 1809 contact. The 1813 contact also seems to be a publishing link (through Wilson). Although there are newspaper reports of Eaton's bankrupcy in 1803 and then of his being taken into custody by the Sheriff of London in November 1803, on an outstanding sentence for sedition, there is no mention of the length of the sentence nor of the requirement of solitary confinement.

Eaton is a distinctive name and it is probable that Godwin knew him through the publishing of Cursory Strictures (and from Eaton's other activities). There are no initials, and the only possible alternative spelling Eton, is linked closely to Reveley in the 1790s (esp 1796 and 1798 - when Eaton is in America). This suggests Godwin is not mixing up different people when he refers to Eaton. To be wholly certain of the 1804 identification the records of his imprisonment should be tracked, but the entries have been coded for Eaton at present.

One of the 'call on's in 1804 is with 'EW' - Everina/Eliza Wollstonecraft. Eaton had published a portrait of Wollstonecraft so it is possible that this was in relation to that picture.
