The main issue regarding the 'Edgworth' (sic) entries in Godwin's diary is to decide when Godwin is referring to Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849), novelist and educationist, and, alternatively, when he is referring to her father, Richard Lovell Edgworth (1744-1817), educational writer and engineer.
The first contact with the family in the diary is the mention of 'Miss Edgworth' on 1.5.1795, when Godwin met Maria at a dinner held by King. Most of the Edgeworth contacts are in the context of the Johnson circle. Joseph Johnson publishes Practical Education in 1798, a joint work by Richard and Maria, and also publishes Maria's novels. As well as working together, Richard and Maria seem to have travelled together eg. to Paris in 1802. Most of the references after 1795 are, in fact, to Edgeworth junr. Since Richard is travelling with Maria this seems possible as a reference to Maria, but it is unusual as a reference to a woman and these entries should be treated with care.
