Ellis began working for the British Museum in 1800 after several years at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. He was appointed keeper of printed books in 1806 and secretary to the trustees of the British Museum in 1814. He was later perceived to be ineffectual in his job and unsuited to transforming the British Museum from an elitist institution to one open to the general public.
There are over thirty entries to Ellis between 1802 and 1835, some with the initial H, some with a reference to Museum, and some with a reference to Westminister Abbey. We have assumed that all these references identify the same individual.
