David Steuart Erskine was the founder of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. 'Buchan' leaves his card for Godwin when Godwin is in Edinburgh in 1816, follows this up with an invitation the following day, and Godwin calls on him the day after. When Godwin goes to Melrose ten days later to meet Scott it seems that they 'adv' Buchan, but Godwin also suggests that Buchan is not at home (the entry is Melrose, w. Scott; adv. Buchann). This is one of the more puzzling entries in the diary.
