John Fairley was an Edinburgh businessman who helped Godwin to establish a sales network for his books in Scotland. He also manufactured umbrellas. Godwin wrote a substantial number of letters to him, particularly in 1811 when Godwin's step-son, Charles Clairmont, went to Edinburgh to work with Archibald Constable, with Fairley taking him in and providing him lodgings when he first arrived in Edinburgh.
Godwin spelled this name Fairly for much of the diary, although in 1811 it looks like he switched from Fairly to Fairley, and then back again. These have all been coded as John Fairley.
