  • Birth Date: 1  February  1766
  • Death Date: December  1840
  • Occupation: writer

Elizabeth Fenwick was a novelist and writer who married John Fenwick in the late 1780s. The couple had two children, Orlando and Elizabeth or 'Eliza'. John Fenwick proved to be an incorrible alcoholic whom she had left by 1800, relying on her own talents to support the family. She worked for a period managing Godwin's Juvenile Library. The DNB has her emigrating to Barbados and then America in 1814 and there are no later appearances of 'E Fk' (Godwin's shorthand for her name) in the diary. On her son Orlando's birth record, the grandparents are identified at Peter and Elizabeth Jaco. Peter Jaco was an early Methodist preache, serving in Warrington, Dublin, Cornwall, Sheffield and London, from 1767.

In Godwin's diary, she is normally denoted by 'Mrs Fenwick, E Fenwick, E Fk' but she has also been included when he calls on the Fenwicks, or Fenwick's. Mrs Fenwick is also sometimes used to differentiate Mrs Fenwick from her daughter Eliza.

Elizabeth Fenwick becomes a regular independent entry in the Diary from 1797, especially around the death of Wollstonecraft (and after the death she is entered as 'EF'), and Godwin seems careful to note plural Fenwicks in visits, although visits to and from a singular Fenwick continue and are not coded for both. 'Fenwick's' is, it seems, used as a plural rather than simply as a possessive, and these have been coded for both Fenwick and 'EF'.

On 26 June 1802 E Fenwick called ppc (pour prendre congé) indicating a prolonged absence. In 1803 Mrs and E Fenwick call. In 1804 E and E Fenwick dine. Also in 1804 the way Godwin enters the name changes to E Fk but there are also a number of E Fks. It is possible these refer to John Foulkes, but it seems more likely that E Fk refers to Elizabeth Fenwick and E Fks refers to her when she appears with her daughter Eliza, and these have been coded accordingly. The appearance of E Fk and E Fks in the diary predates the disappearance of Foulkes entries.

Godwin seems to use Fk as a shorthand for Fenwick. However, it has to be noted that there are a variety of forms of reference to Mrs Fenwick, Eliza Fenwick, EF and EFk and, perhaps above all E Fks, and that these must give rise to some concern about the accuracy of the identification. The occasional use of 'Mrs Fenwick' suggests the possibility that, after their initial friendship, Godwin uses this to refer to John Fenwick's mother. It is also unclear whether 2 FKs always refers to Mr and Mrs - simply because their marriage was turbulent and involved a number of breakdowns.

There are also references to Thomas Fenwick, who is uncoded but may have been John's brother, who owned a shop in Penzance and provided support and refuge for Mrs Fenwick on a number of occasions. He went bankrupt in 1803 and moved to Portsmouth. He may have moved to London later, and it is possible that the T Fenwick, Limehouse, (1 February 1811) is a reference to him, but this is conjectural and the entry has not been coded.

There must also be some hesitation in the identification of 'O Fk' as the son, when O Fks is also being used (which would be an unusual form of reference for a single person). Indeed, there are also issues about the age of the children - since independent visits by Orlando, who was born in 1798, would be unlikely - yet there are references to O Fenwick from 1804.

Eliza Fenwick was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Fenwick (see the latter's DNB entry).

She appears in the diary mostly with her mother although there are a number of 'Miss Fenwicks' and 'EF junr' entries in 1811. 'E and E Fk' call (ppc) in 1811, but this seems to be the daughter taking leave, since Elizabeth re-appears soon after this date.
