Godwin first met Peter Finnerty at James Perry's in 1807 when Finnerty was a reporter for the Morning Chronicle, then at the same venue the following year. There is also a strong link to John Philpott Curran, especially in 1817. Contact is intermittent between 1807 and 1821. Crucially, there is no contact earlier, when Finnerty, along with other sympathisers with the Irish Rebellion of 1798, planned insurrectionary activity in London, only to flee back to Ireland after the arrest of Colonel Despard. After 1805, Finnerty is linked to the programme of constitutional agitation under Francis Burdett.
