Richard Fitzpatrick was an army officer, politician, and poet, with very close contacts with Fox and Whig circles, and was active in petitioning the King to intervene to secure the release of Lafayette who had been imprisoned on surrendering himself to the Austrians.. Godwin's three contacts with him all took place at Lauderdale's. A reference in 1796 to calling on Sir Jerome Fitzpatrick is thought to be unrelated (and it is possible that this might be a reference to Sir Jeremiah Fitzpatrick (c.1740–1810) with whom Godwin shared an interest in penal reform (See DNB).

Godwin entered him under 1796 in the 1796 lists, which is when he first appears in the diary.
