Dr George Fordyce was an old acquaintance of Mary Wollstonecraft and seems to become acquainted with Godwin in the summer of 1797, before the birth of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. There is no effective contact between them after the death of Mary Wollstonecraft until February of the following year (although Godwin calls twice Fordyce is not at home). Subsequent contact is intermittent and declining. Godwin noted in his 1796 diary list that he met 'Fordyce, G' in 1797. The 1793 entry for Fordyce (which is a brief list of people given at the end of a volume of the diary, not attached to a date, and possibly referring to another year) may relate to another Fordyce (possibly James Fordyce, the Scottish minister and moralist who moved from London to Bath in 1792, or William Fordyce, his brother who died in 1792). Both are possible, as is George Fordyce, since the 1793 entry is part of a list that is appended to the Diary. The entry is left uncoded.

Godwin recorded his death in 1802.
