There are about 30 entries on Jno Godwin between 1794 and 1800. This may be John Godwin, listed as pocketbook maker to the Prince of Wales in 1789. He was also a jeweller and a goldsmith according to the London directories. He operated his business from various addresses in the The Strand between 1788-1804. He committed suicide on 30 January 1804, after a bout of depression. There are various notices of his death and the winding up of the business in the Morning Chronicle for 1804 and 1805.
It is by no means certain that this is 'Jno Godwin' but the proximity of the address and a common Norfolk connection suggest that William and he may well have been distant cousins and acquainted. On the other hand, Godwin makes no mention of his death in the diary which seems surprising, although he had had lost contact with 'Jno Godwin' by 1800. The fact that 'Jno' appears with 'J[ohn]' in the diary at the same meetings demonstrates that 'Jno' is not another way to refer to William's brother John.
