John Gurney was the son of Joseph Gurney (1744-1815). We have coded initial references to 'J Gurney jr' and 'Gurney jr', and subsequently references to J Gurney. Gurney acted in the Treason Trials in 1794, and later defended Eaton for libel, Crossfield for the Pop-Gun plot, and O'Connor for Treason. Godwin also seems to have seen him in action in Norwich in 1796. Godwin notes in his 1796 list, meeting 'Gurney Barrister' in 1794, distinguishing him from 'Gurneys' whom he meets in the same year.
The Gurney who appears at Foulkes and then at the theatre in 1800, and the entry in 1801 at Horne Tooke's have been coded as this John Gurney, although either or both might be his father (the Foulkes and Horne Tooke connections through the Treason Trials, however, favour the former identification). Similarly the meeting of Gurnbey at Nelson's funeral, associated with Hamilton Rowan suggests this Gurney.
