Gutch was educated at Christ's Hospital with Charles Lamb and Coleridge. He moved to Bristol in 1803 where he became owner and printer of the tory newspaper Felix Farley's Bristol Journal. He later founded the London Journal in 1828. He was a member fo the Bristol Philosophical and Literary Society and the author of A Lytell Geste of Robin Hode (1847).
