Hamilton studied in Dublin before moving to London in the 1760s. He exhibited at the Society of Artists and was best known for portraiture. He returned to Ireland in 1792 and mixed in radical circles. He is associated in the diary with the Earl of Moira (whom he painted on a number of occasions).
Godwin notes meeting H Hamilton in 1800 (during his trip to Ireland) in his 1796 list. In the same list, Godwin notes meeting Hamilton pere in 1804. This must refer to the Hamilton who appears with Curran, 'son ami' twice in 1804. However, this is probably not Hugh Hamilton's father, a wigmaker and presumably long dead. There is then, in all likelihood, another Hamilton, but he is not mentioned in the contemporary biographies of Curran.
