John Hewlett arranged the first meeting between Mary Wollstonecraft and Joseph Johnson. Hewlett had connections in the London literary world and was hoping to establish a second career as occasional writer on education on and religion. He was elected Lecturer of the untited parishes of St Vedast's, Foster Lane, and St Michael le Querne in January 1786. He was appointed Morning Preacher at the Foundling Hospital near Somers Town in June 1797. Prior to this he ran a school in Shacklewell, near Hackney, Middlesex, to which Godwin sent his ward Thomas Cooper.

We can be sure of the identification because of the known link to Wollstonecraft and because Hewlett's works were published by Johnson and Godwin often records meeting him at the publisher's.
