Hoare began his career as an artist, studying alongside Fuseli and Northcote in Rome in the 1770s. He exhibited in the Royal Academy before beginning his life as a dramatist in 1788. He was also a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Society of Literature.
Godwin sees Hoare mainly between 1796 and 1812. Most of the entries are to Hoare. There is one, the second in 1796, to H Hoare. And P Hoare does not appear until 1805, then reappears in 1810 and reappears again in 1822. This might mean that Godwin only uses P Hoare for Prince Hoare, and that there are relatively few contacts, and the other Hoares are unidentified. Or it might simply be inconsistent use of initials by Godwin. It is difficult to be certain which. The identification thus needs to be treated with caution, except for P Hoare entries. However, there are a good many associations between Hoare and artistic and theatrical circles in Godwin's diary and this has led us to code all Hoare entries as to Prince Hoare.
Godwin records his death.
