Hogg attended Oxford with Percy Shelley and was expelled with him for writing The Necessity of Atheism. He had a long, if strained relationship with Shelley and his circle and was asked by the Shelley family to write a biography of the poet.

Jane Williams never married Thomas Jefferson Hogg but they lived together and she became known as Mrs Hogg. Godwin refers to her twice as Jane Williams in 1822 and there are then a number of references to Mrs williams betwqeen 1822 and 1830. At least some of these entries, like at the performance of Frankenstein that Godwin takes Mary Wollstonecraft-Shelley to with William (29 August 1823) are clearly (from the notes in Mary Shelley's Journals (p. 468) references to Jane Williams. It seems likely that Godwin continued to refer to her as Mrs Williams until 1831. The 1795 and 1815 entries are not coded for Jane Williams, but those from 1822-1830 are.
