Entries to Hopwood are preceded on different occasions by several different initials, incl s, h, m, p, j. Some probably refer to the family of James Hopwood, printer (d. 1819), see DNB
Mrs. Leicester's School, Or, The History of Several Young Ladies, Related by Themselves ..... printed by M.J. Godwin ....
1809, illustrated by
James Hopwood and William Hopwood. The publication date of this fits with when the Hopwoods appear in the diary: all but one
of the 84 refs to the
family are during 1808-12. This supportes their identification as the family of printmakers in the DNB. The DNB gives details of three members
of the family:
James Hopwood the elder, (1745x54-1819), printmaker, and his sons
James Hopwood the younger (bap. c. 1795) and
William Hopwood (1784-1853), both of whom followed their father's trade.
It is not known to whom the other initials refer or who is identified by plain 'Hopwood' entries. The assumption would
normally be the older one, but this is slightly confused here by the fact that G's first contact specifies a W Hopwood.
There is no evidence in existing in letters or in the biographies. Given the uncertainties in individual identifications we have used this as a code to referr to the whole family, including all initials. Several members of the family seemed to have worked together in the book trade and there are also entries that suggest a high degree of intimacy with the family eg. breakfasts at Godwin's and, on 25.12.1809, 'H and M Hopwood pour une semaine.'
