Hoppner features in the 1796 list for 1796, and he records his death in 1810.
The fact that Godwin records him (under 1796) in the 1796 lists makes it likely that he is someone of significance and Hoppner was indeed a painter of great reputation by the mid-1790s, having succeeded Reynolds as portrait painter to the prince of Wales. This makes the attribution of the contacts in 1796 plausible.
The contacts themselves are not that suggestive, being exclusively calls, but there is some evidence that Hoppner and Godwin's circles overlapped. The DNB describes him as 'a brilliant conversationalist .... his intellectual social life centred on younger artists, literary friends, and clubs ... he counted among his friends several eminent poets and literary critics' and other sources records that 'John Hoppner dined at the radical philologist Horne Tooke's and considered designing a commemorative medal after the former's acquittal' (Hoock, The King's Artists, p. 189) and that Hoppner was 'well acquainted' with Benjamin Robert Haydon (Paston, B.R. Haydon and His Friends, p. 30).
