Mary Shelley's Journals, p. 41, n. 3, and p. 50, n. 2. The editors identify Hume as Joseph Hume 1767-1843, from whom Godwin borrowed considerable sums. The death dates are different. It is also difficult to understand how a lowly civil servant (according to the DNB he became a clerk at the victualling office of Somerset House). could have the sums necessary for the loans to Godwin.

St Clair (p. 411) refers to him as a financier. But neither this, nor the different death date in Mary Shelley's Journal should necessarily make us doubt the attribution. Nor do we have grounds for changing it to the better known, radical and politician Joseph Hume (who might appear once in 1827). The DNB is clear that Joseph Hume, the translator and writer, was friends with Hazlitt, Lamb and Godwin.

The DNB suggests Hume has six daughters, but there is also a reference to Hume and son on 24 November 1812. It seems likely that Charles Hume was Joseph Hume's son. Charles appears with Joseph and with 'four sisters' in 30 October 1815. Also, Mrs Hume calls on 18 May 1818 with A and C. 13 December 1818 Godwin writes to Charles Hume. On 13 August 1820 Charles Hume is entered as dining at the Hume's (as on 3 March 1822). He has been left uncoded.

Hume was married to Alexia who died on 29 July 1828. See Jackson's Oxford Journal 2 August 1828 and the Examiner 3 August 1828. Godwin records her death, but there is no mention of a funeral and there has been no recorded contact between Godwin and Hume through the whole of 1827. Godwin writes ito Hume in December 1828 and they dine together early the following year.

The contact with the Hume changes over time - there is a great deal of dinning in 1811 and 1812 but this declines in 1813 and although contact is frequent there is also a fair amount of correspondence between the two (none in the Abinger collection). In 1818 dinning at Hume's again seems to increase, although it does not return to earlier levels. It is notable that the diminution in domestic contact comes at the time that Godwin is attempting to raise money.

There is a reference to J Hume on 1 March 1827, in the company of Bowring. This does seem likely to be the politician Joseph Hume (1777–1855) and has been coded as such.

Listed in the obituary section of the Gentleman's Magazine for 1828 as the wife of Joseph Hume, esq. of Notting-Hill

Godwin records her death, but there is no mention of a funeral and there has been no recorded contact between Godwin and Hume through the whole of 1827. Godwin writes ito Hume in December 1828 and they dine together early the following year.

Joseph Hume features in the diary a total of 542 times and as a venue (V) 343 times. It is highly likely that his wife would also have been present at the venue. Following our custom in relation to other people sharing a home (such as Charles and Mary Lamb), we have coded entries which seem likely to have included Mrs Hume. - the first being in 1808, the last a year or so prior to her death. The assumption is that meal entries would include both, whereas calls may be strictly matters of business to the person named. There are also a number of independent contacts with Mrs Hume.
