  • Name: Inchbald, Elizabeth
  • Gender: Female
  • Birth Date: 15  October  1753
  • Death Date: 1  August  1821
  • Occupation: actress
  • Occupation: playwright
  • Occupation: novelist

Inchbald was a prominent playwright and novelist of the period. Godwin and she were close friends and literary collaborators before he married Mary Wollstonecraft, when they fell out - with the suggestion that Inchbald took the view of the Twisses, that Wollstonecraft had been presenting herself as a married woman (as Mrs Imlay). Their friendship was gradually repaired after Wollstonecraft's death but never achieved the same level of intimacy.

Godwin refers to Elizabeth interchangeably as ‘Inchbald’ and ‘Mrs Inchbald’, and later as ‘E Inchbald’. There doesn’t appear to be any reason for his switching between these conventions – of the 44 entries in 1795, for example, only two refer to ‘Mrs Inchbald’. Elizabeth’s husband, Joseph, died suddenly in 1779, so there’s little mistake of the ‘Inchbald' entries as referring to him. The only other males seem to be Elizabeth’s stepsons, George and Robert, from Joseph’s previous relationship(s). Given Godwin and Inchbald’s documented level of intimacy, it makes sense that the ‘Inchbalds’ refer to Elizabeth, even though the title is missing and it is unusual for him to drop the 'Mrs'.
