Johnston was regaled as the Scottish Roscius after immediate success on the Edinburgh stage in 1794. He made his London debut as Norval in John Home's Douglas in October 1797 which prompted Godwin to write to him with both praise and advice.
The Johnston entry for 2 November 1797 has been coded as Henry as it is probable that he called on Godwin in response to the letter but other instances of Johnston have not been so coded due to lack of evidence.
